The Weekend Replay
Summer music is happening, and it’s happening right here and right now. Welcome back to the Weekend Replay. Here are some of the hottest and freshest tracks out now.
mall goth starts things off incredibly strong with the release of their self-titled debut EP with five energetic tracks that showcase the band’s diverse array of talents which is echoed on Bully’s Lucky For You LP with a spread of unique and individual songs that still makes a lot of sense from track to track. The Aces then join with new music on their album I’ve Loved You For So Long. It’s an indie pop/rock blend with some catchy lines and drums that really take center stage. swim school’s EP, duality matches this vibe really well, just a little softer and with sparkling guitars leading the way. Plus, Sorry Girls chime in with Bravo!, a very jammable LP with surprising instrumentation—meaning I was not expecting but was happily surprised when I heard a saxophone on this album.
Fontaines D.C. frontman Grian Chatten released another single, “Last Time Every Time Forever,” which sets us into a perfect groove. The groove gets even deeper with Vulfmon, whose album Vulfnik has a 90s alternative (Cake-ish/Beck-esque) feel with a contemporary lyrical feel. Saba and No ID wrap up this groove break with “hue_man nature”, a light hip-hop track that joins these artists' talents in a really solid piece.
Buggin completely changes the pace with Concrete Cowboys, a super energetic and lively punk album with artwork that I just want to keep staring at for hours. Plus the music is really really fun, so it’s a win all around. Protomartyr’s Formal Growth In The Desert maintains a punk sound that’s much slower and a more mysterious sound than what Buggin was offering and features guitars that take the whole LP to a new level. And if you want to talk guitars, talk to The Stools. Their new album R U Saved? utilizes guitars (and drums) (and vocals) that are beyond stunning.
Not to give you whiplash or anything, but are you ready for another vibe shift? Generationals shared Heatherhead this past week. If I say “traditional indie” I can only hope you think of 2012-2018 alternative/indie pop because that’s what I’m talking about and that’s exactly where this album is coming from…except it’s developed very very clearly. Although inspired by the sound of that era, it’s definitely grown up. Beach Fossils’ Bunny LP was also just released, and it appropriately has a very beachy yet dissonant pop rock sound.
“Crash The Car” is the latest single from the duo KNOWER, a jazzy, soft, good track to help the transition between seasons. But Sylfur’s No Doubt, No Denial takes soft and turns it to eerie in a way that contradicts feelings of comfort and grief. The eerie sounds are amplified with death’s dynamic shroud, who just shared “You Are Burning Me Up Like This”, a single with glitchcore/hyperpop roots with a sound that ripens and evolves throughout.
And one last track for you this week, Paris Hilton took notes from Taylor Swift, rereleasing her iconic song “Stars Are Blind (Paris’ Version) [feat. Kim Petras]”.
