THROWBACK THURSDAY

Welcome back to Throwback Thursday! Here, I have compiled a playlist of songs that have come out this week in the past. With artists ranging from Jewel to Metallica, there is no shortage of variety in our selection, and there is certainly a song for everyone.

Prior to diving into our playlist, it’s worth mentioning that some of the most symbolic moments in musical history that have also happened this week in the past. Beginning with the first ever CD players being released in America on March 2, 1983. The first album to be released on CD was Billy Joel’s 52nd Street. This would mark the beginning of a new age of music, allowing much more music to be held opposed to a traditional vinyl.

Just three months before the release of Janis Joplin’s album Pearl was release, the singer passed away. However, on February 27, 1971, it hit number one in the United States, and claimed this spot for the next nine weeks to follow.

Lastly, on February 27, 1980, Michael Jackson won his first ever Grammy for Best R&B Performance for his hit, “Don’t Stop ‘Til You Get Enough". He went on to win twelve more throughout his career.

This week our playlist opens with one of my favorites from the 80’s. “Everybody Wants To Rule The World” was released in 1985 by Tears For Fears. The song is the band’s biggest hit, and ironically was a last minute addition to their album Songs from the Big Chair.

“Everybody Wants To Rule The World” - Tears For Fears (1985)

  1. “The Space Between” - Dave Matthews Band (2001)

  2. “Them And Us” - Bad Religion (1996)

  3. “Down By The Water” - PJ Harvey (1995

  4. “Born to Run”- Live at the Hammersmith Odeon 1975- Bruce Springsteen (2006)

  5. “You Were Meant For Me” - Jewel (1995)

  6. “Sunday Bloody Sunday” - U2 (1883)

  7. “Working Man” - Rush (1974)

  8. “Mercy”- Duffy (2008)

  9. “Master Of Puppets”- Metallica (1986)

In 1975, Bruce Springsteen and The E Street Band performed at the Hammersmith Odeon in London during the Born To Run Tours. In 2006, Springsteen released the live recordings as a full length album, including his hit “Born To Run.” He went on to acknowledge that this was one of his most legendary performances to date.

Jewel’s “You Were Meant For Me” is the fifth song on this week’s playlist, and is admittedly one of my favorite songs of all time. The song was a part of he debut studio album, Pieces of You and it hit number one on Billboard’s Adult Contemporary chart. A year later, the song was re-released physically, and climbed the charts once again, re-entering the top ten just a month later.

“Sunday Bloody Sunday” is next on the playlist, and was released by Irish rock band U2 in 1983. “Sunday Bloody Sunday” is the opening track on their album War, and is one of the band’s most critically acclaimed songs. Although it sparked controversy, it remains a staple to U2’s live performances.

The last song on our playlist, “Master of Puppets” by Metallica, is the title track of their 1986 album. It remains one of their most popular songs, and is Metallica’s most played song live to date.

Join us next week for a brand new playlist with blasts from the past from your favorite artists and bands!
