WEEKEND REPLAY 1.30.23

Pollyanna. Popcaan. Prentiss. Please join along for this playful and powerful edition of the Weekend Replay with new music from these pivotal people and plenty more.

Blondshell shook Webster Hall this weekend while opening for Suki Waterhouse after releasing “Joiner”, a new single with an accompanying album set to be released in April. Shred Flintstone has been putting out a steady stream of new tunes for all of us to fall for, and their new single “i want to get high but i’m too paranoid” keeps up their stunning sound, which Vermillion’s new EP, VERMILLION, also does beautifully. New Jersey’s Pollyanna has been impossible to ignore, but if you’ve missed what they’ve been up to lately, they just shared a cover of Lady Gaga’s “Judas”, which brings a new life to the song.

Fall Out Boy has released another single “Heartbreak Feels So Good”, and Lil Yachty released Let’s Start Here., a 14-track album that is getting talked about in so many circles–from the unique sound coming from Lil Yachty to the AI-generated album cover, there’s much to be said about it. The Drin released Today My Friend You Drunk the Venom, an album with dark and weighty tracks like “Five and Dime Conjurers”, which King Tuff contrasts with some tonal levity on Smalltown Stardust

Prentiss has just released i tried, a zippy 10-track album that comes in at just over half an hour long, and quinnie whose music has gained immense notoriety on TikTok shared “flounder”, a brighter-sounding track in comparison to what has been shared from the artist before. Kimbra (yes, the same Kimbra featured on the song of 2011, Gotye’s “Somebody That I Used to Know”) has shared A Reckoning, an album packed with profundity in both an emotional and sonic sense.

French-Malian pop singer Aya Nakamura has gifted the world DNK, an album with such a beautiful and fluid sound. Rosalía’s Spanish pop sounds just keep getting better with the release of her new single “LLYLM”. Popcaan has shared Great Is He, an impressive album that highlights the artist’s ability to take his Jamaican background and inspiration and apply it to different genres.

The Arcs, founded by Dan Auerbach of the Black Keys, have shared Electrophonic Chronic, their first full-length album since Yours, Dreamily, (2015). Complete Mountain Almanac is the self-titled album from the group consisting of Sweden-based singer and composer Rebekka Karijord, multimedia artist Jessica Dessner, and her brothers Bryce and Aaron Dessner, both of whom are in The National and the latter of which has been producing for pop superstar Taylor Swift since the release of her 2020 album folklore. The 12-tracks on Complete Mountain Almanac correspond to each of the 12 months in the year making for a very interesting concept album.

JR JR and Yoke Lore have joined forces on an elegant single, “More of Your Love”, and JW Francis’s full album, Dream House, has finally landed. Ahead of the release of the television miniseries coming to Amazon Prime Video in March, Daisy Jones & The Six have released “Regret Me”, a single that certainly hints at the Fleetwood Mac inspiration behind the fictional band. Stephen Sanchez’s totally individual soft love sounds have returned with “Evangeline”, sampling from Bobby Goldboro’s 1968 “Honey”. Plus, Miniature Tigers are back with their continuously evolving sound on their self-titled LP, and Bodywash shared their stunning sound with a new single “Mastif Central”

Cordae and Anderson .Paak are working together again with the release of a super fun, groovy new single, “Two Tens”. White Reaper’s Asking For A Ride is finally here with really great tracks like “Getting into Trouble w/ the Boss”, and Waterparks brings energy with “REAL SUPER DARK”. Q’s contribution to new music this week should not be overlooked–“LUV (I KNOW I WANT THIS FOR REAL)” is such a uniquely danceable and exciting track. We end the week with the energy sustained through AudioLust & HigherLove from SG Lewis and slowthai’s “Selfish”.

And that’s it for this week’s new releases! It’s been another phenomenal week to check out fresh and polished tracks from a pristine palette of artists, be sure to come back next week to peruse even more.
