WEEKEND REPLAY 2.06.23
February might be the shortest month of the year, but there is absolutely no time wasted with a fresh stack of new music. Welcome to the longest Weekend Replay yet—there was way too much good music released in the past week to keep things brief.
Kicking the week off with an unbelievable release, Skatune Network, JER, and Jeff Rosenstock have joined forces in “(Sk)A-Punk”, a ska cover of Vampire Weekend’s “A-Punk”. Cheekface matches the liveliness in their typical fashion with “The Fringe”, and Geese has just released “Cowboy Nudes”. The Men approach rock in a vastly different manner with New York City and tracks like “River Flows” share a unique vintage southern rock sound, and Rosewilder’s Memories from Some Other Time offers a change in tonality while maintaining depth.
Irish-punk group M(h)aol comes into the picture this week with a very exciting album Attachment Styles, with astonishing energy and tracks like “Femme” that will totally leave you wanting more, and Raue takes the punk from M(h)aol and adds a little pop to it with “Karma”. With a similar tonality, Forest Green shared their newest single, “Glass”, and Equipment released “Talk to Strangers”.
Let the Earth be Silent is the newest release from Fvnerals, and it is truly haunting and super alluring. Falling In Reverse is here to shake things up again with their single “Watch The World Burn”. Opus Kink contributes a totally original sound this week with “Dust”—it’s familiar sounding while still being completely unique, and Roller Derby’s “Always on My Mind” conjures up a very similar feeling. While tuned into the nostalgic-ish sound, Zopp’s Dominion is a must-listen. It’s fun, it’s fresh, and it is certainly funky.
Subversive Behaviour is the latest album from Tropical Fuck Storm, and it is super interesting (especially noting one of the five songs on the album is nearly 18 minutes long). Highnoon’s single “Are You With Me” starts off the indie sound for this week strong, and Will Epstein’s Wendy keeps it going in full force. Graham Coxon and Rose Elinor Dougall have a conjoined project, The WAEVE, which has just put out a self-titled album with ten tracks and a very cohesive sound. Then, Babebee comes in with tainted in our memories, an EP with an electropop-indie hybrid sound. Tennis fuels the indie end of the spectrum with “Forbidden Doors”, and LOWER MARS goes all out on the electropop front with Mom, Look Where I Am. Pink Colour Surgery is the latest from French noise band The Psychotic Monks, and even if you don’t think it’d be your jam…it really might be. Speaking of jams, RAYE shared My 21st Century Blues, a pop/dance fusion, The Go! Team’s Get Up Sequences Part Two is a super groovy and energetic album that is super appreciated for this week’s sound, and Jake Shears released a very groovy and danceable single, “Too Much Music”. While on the dance kick, “Mama’s Eyes” from METTE is, I would argue, the dance single of the week.
Young Fathers came out with Heavy Heavy, a super eclectic blend of songs, and “The Party” from Portraits Of Tracy offers a very balanced look into the fluidity of genres. Then, DEBBY FRIDAY kicks things up a notch with “I GOT IT” with a feature from UÑAS.
Hamish Hawk’s album Angel Numbers is a fresh look at where the new wave genre is in 2023, and Sunny War’s Anarchist Gospel blends new and old in an exciting way. For some spoken word and hip-hop, Your Old Droog is here with “The Groundhog”, which was released on Groundhog Day this year. Then, Somebody’s Child’s self-titled LP comes along to brace us for the end of the Weekend Replay. And then, at last, “Layla” from Unknown Mortal Orchestra and The Cannonballers from Colony House end the week’s releases on a light alternative sound.
Just because February is short doesn’t mean your favorite playlist of new releases has to be. Check out the Weekend Replay here, and come back next week for even more fresh finds!
