twentythreenineteen’s All This Love: New EP Review
Philadelphia-based band twentythreenineteen released their new EP All This Love on Aug. 31, 2023. Featuring three previously-released tracks and three new ones, the project follows the group’s 2019 debut album, marking four years since a new one.
Opening track “Navigate” is an indie rock song that bounces between swaying verses and more straightforward rock choruses. Featuring multiple facets to its production, it transforms as it goes on. One of the best components to the production is the backing vocals across it. Second track “Everything in Between” (the lead single of the project) touches on the theme of dreaming. A lighter indie rock track than the previously-mentioned one, they sing, “Not when I dream / It’s all magical things / Everything in between.” The track turns into an ode to a loved one, writing about said loved one being there to witness the dream and live through both their lives and dreams together.
“Stain Glass Staring” is the sleekest-sounding song on the EP and the overall highlight of it. The peak of the song is towards the end when the track completely shifts gears and the production is mainly based on a guitar solo and light drums. The song slows down and the vocal’s melody perfectly aligns with the guitar’s. “Well the eye is the window to the soul, the defiant pupil / My thinning of blue / All my love I owe to you,” they sing, as the track fades out. The final line is a reference to the name of the project, seemingly dedicating their love and art to this loved one. “3:33” is a moment of pain amongst the mainly love-inflicted tracks. With talks of leaving and constant pain, the song brings out an angrier side to the group’s sound and songwriting. “The birds used to sing so lively / Now they’re fast asleep,” they sing. There is a resolution, though, as it closes with “All the love I have I owe to you,” they sing wistfully. The guitar builds up for it to dissolve as the drums fade out.
“Vertex” is a more instrumental-focused track than the others. There is an emphasis on the guitar bouncing back and forth and pauses in the vocals to let the production shine. The end is composed of hushed voices and a spotlight ricocheting between the drum section and the cascading electric guitar. Closing track “Chessie” is a mid tempo rock song where the band gets the most sentimental that they do across the EP, as the lyrical content has traces of closure and unresolved love throughout. They describe the aftermath of a breakup and how they never thought the two could ever be so far away from each other. “It’s ‘I love you’ until I die / It’s ‘I love you’ ‘til I’m gone,” they sing on the outro of the song.
All This Love is an ode to the way people love and the positive ways it can affect someone, while also not shying away from the anxieties of this. twentythreenineteen’s indie rock project provides sleek production and solid songwriting to make their EP shine.
