icymi SpongeBob and Patrick played a death grips cover set over the weekend. Yes, it’s true and here’s why

In case you missed it, over the weekend Spongebob and Patrick played a Death Grips cover set. Yes, you heard me right. Spongebob and Patrick played an entire Death Grips cover set. No, it wasn’t in bikini bottom. It was held in a basement located in New Paltz, New York known as “RadioShack”.

On Friday October 28th the DIY space hosted a halloween cover show featuring acts Wrong Coast as Fidlar, No Momentum as Fall Out Boy, 7 on pump 1 as Nirvana and last but not least The Mile Run as Death Grips. The event went as expected until the Mile Run was set to play.

Starting the set with a pirate introducing them, one might say it was Patchy the pirate from the beloved show a haunting intro sample began to play with audio of spongebob and patrick speaking to one another transitioning into the theme music from indie horror film ‘The Lighthouse”. The two piece band then reveals themselves to the audience dressed as inflatable figures of Spongebob and Patrick causing the audience to roar in excitement for the music about to come. The two played their entire set and garnered a ton of audience participation. An unforgettable night for everyone who attended and played at the show but what the band didn’t expect was for the set to go viral online.

First appearing on twitter a user @SEPHIROTHTlTS posted a video of the two with the caption “A local band called The Mile Run did a Death Grips cover set in spongebob costumes and it’s a work of art” which gained the band over 547.8k + views.

We reached out to the band to ask them what they think of the viral success they’ve been receiving.

“We're still riding the high from this show, it's definitely stirred up an appetite to get back into it after our hiatus. Can't wait to start playing again and this is perfect timing for the new single and EP. Love the new following.” Frontman (who was also dressed as spongebob) Matt Chiarelli goes on.

“John [drummer for the mile run] and I spent a year living in a house together, often linking up at the end of the day to eat and watching SpongeBob together, all while writing and recording music together. Some of my best memories. It led to this show idea which got canceled last second last year, so the fact that we finally got to do it was so cathartic and I'm ecstatic at how it's panning out with the community.”

Cathartic it was. Anyone who’s attended a house show knows how unpredictable they can be especially while playing in an inflatable costume. Drummer of the band John Haring spoke about what it was like to drum while dressed as Patrick.

“The suit was WAY bigger than I thought it would be. Patrick's gut was literally covering half of my snare. It was extremely difficult to play around and I sustained several hand injuries. The idea was to stay in the suits as long as possible. The way our tracks were set up, the first 4 songs needed to go immediately into each other. So, I at least needed to brave those first 4 before I could take the suit off. It was really really hot in there, but shockingly enough the fan that inflated the suit was helping keep me cool quite a bit. Don't kid yourself though, on a scale of 1-10, it really just took me from a 10 to a 9.”

Braving the first four songs in the costumes turned out to be a major success for the band. As the video grows and gains more views the band is also gaining new fans and followers in return. The Mile Run is now set to release a new single off their upcoming EP in the near future.
