THE WEEKEND REPLAY
Welcome back to another Weekend Replay here at Doors at Seven! I have another great week of tunes lined up for you. Get your headphones, speaker or whatever you use to listen to music ready, and let’s get started.
Kicking off rock music this week is Vampire Weekend’s long-awaited return. The beloved alternative rock group dropped a double single, featuring the stellar “Gen-X Cops.” The song comes off of their upcoming album Only God Was Above Us, which comes out April 5. The track sees the group return to their rock roots, compared to their hushed, folkier record Father of the Bride in 2019. King In Yellow released their new track “Modern Dance.” The song is a grainy indie rock track with heavily reverbed guitar and pounding drums. The result is one of the finest rock cuts from the past week. Midnight Foolishness dropped “Quitters Get Nothing,” a grunge rock song with whirring synths behind a heavy guitar and drum track. The vocals are haunting in the best way, with some sick guitar playing to accompany it.
Alternative music kicks off with Holly Humberstone’s new song “Dive.” The upcoming British pop act’s first new solo song since her debut LP from late last year leans in a poppier direction than her last work. With a laidback guitar track, smooth vocals and yes, even a Real Housewives sample, the song is one of Humberstone’s greatest yet. Maya Hawke announced her upcoming third album Chaos Angel on Valentine’s Day with her new single “Missing Out.” The track has production courtesy of Christian Lee Hutson, and sees Hawke take a more upbeat approach to the folky sound she’s developed over her singing career. If the song is any indication of her upcoming record, it’s one that cannot be missed.
Dua Lipa leads pop music with her new track “Training Season.” The pop star’s second single off of her upcoming album has been teased for weeks, with the first live performance of it at the 2024 GRAMMYs. It follows the psychedelic pop sound of her previous single “Houdini,” with production from Kevin Parker (of Tame Impala). Lipa sings about how certain lovers need to shape up quickly because, as she sings, “Training season’s over.” Caroline Polachek released the deluxe version of her 2023 acclaimed record Desire, I Want To Turn Into You with some new previously-unreleased additions to it. One of them is a cover of “Spring Is Coming With A Strawberry In The Mouth” by Roger Doyle. The synth-pop song is mostly made up of bouncing synth tracks and Polachek’s heavenly echoed vocals. Beyoncé dropped her two new songs after an announcement via a Verizon commercial at the Super Bowl. The star takes a country route on the two tracks, with the highlight being “TEXAS HOLD ‘EM.” She does country with ease, as she sings over a plucked acoustic guitar and background exclaims. It leads the upcoming second act of her RENAISSANCE era, out March 29.
