THE WEEKEND REPLAY

Welcome back to this week’s edition of The Weekend Replay! I’m back with some new, post-holiday break music for the back to school and work week. Get some headphones, connect your phone to your car or however you like to listen and let’s get started.

Kicking off alternative music this week is april june’s “it’s all my fault,” a simmering, alt-pop track from the singer-songwriter-producer. Featuring a steady distorted guitar track, the chorus’s melody is perfectly layered with different vocal tracks and june’s stunning voice. EKKSTACY’s “shutting me out” is an indie-pop track with upbeat guitar-focused production, and lyrics touching on frustration within a relationship. Indie singer-songwriter Tom Rosenthal’s new reimagined record Zz-Sides features “My Body,” the soft piano track where Rosenthal touches on personal devastations from his life where people couldn’t see his “falling apart.”

Leading pop music is Amber Bain’s The Japanese House’s stripped back cover of ABBA’s “Super Trouper.” Bain’s version is composed only of her soft voice and a piano. The result is an entirely new take on the classic, and it is such a good one. Philip Brooks released “to be all alone,” the artist’s new acoustic track with delicate acoustic guitar fingerpicking and smooth vocals from Brooks. “Lonely Times” from Keep Shelly In Athens is an electronic-infused alt-pop track, with echoing and powerful vocals. The synth tracks stand out in the post-chorus to elevate the track to a new level. Björk and ROSALÍA’s new collaboration “Oral” is a previously-unreleased (for more than two decades) song from the former Icelandic artist. The art pop track’s profits will be donated to stop open net pen fish farming in Iceland, and was inspired by a “dancehall beat.”
