The Weekend Replay
This June has really been heating things up, and the music keeps on coming in hot, and the roundup for the Weekend Replay is just a slice of the phenomenal music we get to share here at Doors At Seven.
Kicking us off is Origami Angel’s The Brightest Days, which is finally here and everything you could've dreamed it would be. This band is equally emo and pop punk, and they really are the moment. They also set the tone of what’s to come this week (hint: lots of emo and (pop) punk). Spanish Love Songs follows up with “Clean-Up Crew”, a high-energy emo tune with obvious emotions in the lyrics and the heart of the track. And Walter Etc. chimes in as well with a spirited poppy punky single titled “When The Band Breaks Up Again”, and Girl Scout’s “Boy In Blue” takes some inspo from some heavier emo and punk roots and turns them into an indie song.
Truth be told, I don’t know if there has ever been so much true emo and punk in a Weekend Replay before now, but luckily, Sad Park’s latest single “CAROUSEL” keeps the sound going. Plus, gartenhead’s “Boiling In The Bathtub” is out now, adding a noisier track to the mix along with some really stunning vocals. Also, remember Jessie J’s collaboration with B.o.B.? “Price Tag” from 2011? Yeah, well fusion babies incorporated a mini cover of that into their new album, conception, a grittier punk LP, and it’s incredible. And speaking of blending genres and elements together, JEALOUS MIND takes elements from emo and punk to meshes them seamlessly into a really punky emo track, “SHAKE”.
Switching things up a little bit—a lot actually—Slaughter Beach, Dog just shared “Strange Weather” an indie/southern folk rock-inspired track with vocals from frontman Jake Ewald and a guest appearance from Erin Rae. It gets even more country-ish briefly with a new release from The Pink Stones and Nikki Lane. The collab’s product is a song called “Baby, I’m Still Right Here (With You)”, and it features some really dynamic and exciting instrumentation that is sure to get your groove goin’. Hand Habits came out with a new EP, Sugar the Bruise. Singles from this have been featured on TWR before, but this EP surpassed the precedent that the singles set. “Waiting” is the latest from Sonny & The Sunsets, and it’s a really summery indie track that keeps things super light and refreshing. “My My”, a single from Young Summer, is another new sound for the week that utilizes the artist’s elegant vocals, keeping things light—yet it still packs a dazzling punch.
Two artists that have also popped by on TWR before that are back are hemlocke springs and MAN ON MAN. hemlocke springs just released a new single “heavun”. The indie vibes are really strong with this artist who is making it her mission to impress beyond words. Then, MAN ON MAN shared PROVINCETOWN, a glimmering testament to the vibrancy of queerness and the personal relationship we all have to our identities.
We’ll wrap up this week where we started, with the emo and punky sounds you signed up for. mauve’s “Oh My God” is an early-aughts emo-inspired track with a cute call-and-response moment with the bass and guitar, and it’s really really fun. The XCERTS keep up with a traditional emo sound with very clear pop elements introduced in the production on “Blame”. And Home Is Where closes things out with the whaler, a really emo punky stunningly produced ten tracks that you will adore.
This year in music is built to stun us all, I swear. It’s just getting better and better, and we cannot wait to share it all with you.
