PNW based group Mauve releases impressive debut LP “About The Weather”

The trio are still teenagers but are making an incredible jump into the scene.

Consisting of Olive Murray (vocals & guitar), Noah Mandac (bass), and Kyle Kraft (drums), this trio is already creating a name for themselves within the DIY scene. They formed the group during the pandemic and for being so young, the band has shown very impressive prowess with their music, and the live shows they have played already also are so infectious.

Their previous release – the single “20,000 Degrees” (2022) – was their debut song and it was a fantastic start to a very promising career. The nine-track LP also highlights their musical maturity and puts them in the running for being a prominent name in the emo scene, particularly the 5th-wave subgenre of emo music.

The opening track on the album is called “Dawn” and it’s a beautiful, instrumental piece. I really enjoyed the guitar on this track, and where it kicks in with the drums and bass, it becomes very dynamic. “Dawn” is a perfect representation of the calmness & energy of life, switching back between the two throughout the track, creating an image of dawn & pre-sunrise, compared to later in the day when life gets busier.

Later on the tracklist comes “Dusk”, and it pairs so well with “Dawn”! The guitar has some slightly heavier chords and paired with the slightly more prominent drums, this instrumental-only track is another that has been executed above par.

Between songs like “Drive/Threw” and “Slow Yer Roll”, the creative wordplay and stellar vocalization & instrumentals make this LP unforgettable, particularly with the relatable and repeated screaming of “Why can’t you love yourself?”. Similar to the sound of bands like Origami Angel & RILEY!, Mauve is certainly at the forefront of the emerging post-pandemic newcomers. The band themselves come out and say it was “originally founded on the basis of showing [their] own take on the direction [they] felt 5th wave emo music could go” and they were focused on extreme attention to detail. After writing 14 different songs over the course of two years and a seven-and-a-half-month-long recording process, About The Weather came to fruition with nine beautifully executed songs.

I absolutely loved their debut LP and am super excited to keep watching Mauve!

The trio is playing an album release/tour kick off show on July 18th with Growing Pains & Swiss Army Wife. They play at McMenamins in Portland, OR – so don’t miss them if you’re in the area!
