The Weekend Replay

Welcome back to another Weekend Replay! The past week came with a slew of some amazing new tunes.

Starting this week’s indie-rock releases off is Oldsoul’s “Lavender Cane.” The band’s first new single since 2021 is an upbeat rock track that leads their third full-length record Education on Earth. The track expands upon the Boston group’s sound and sets the tone for their new record perfectly. The American Hotel System released their new track “Tripping,” a rock track with shoegaze elements throughout the production that perfectly matches the lyrical content. The song describes struggles with mental health and overcoming challenges with it, making it a very inspiring one. Walter Etc.’s “GTFO Thoreau” is another stunning rock cut from the past week. The song is the lead single from the band’s upcoming record When The Band Breaks Up Again, which is due out Sept. 8. “Pendulum” from Spanish Love Songs is a guitar-based lower-pace alternative track that shines with its production and songwriting. The song will be on the group’s No Joy record that will be released in its entirety on Aug. 25. Emo-rock group nervous surface dropped “lemon-lime” from their new record PPL TALK out Sept. 15. The track stands out with its momentum building up throughout, ending in a haze of percussion. Hudson Valley-based pop punk band Screaming Meemies dropped their debut record Sorry We’re Late, featuring the highlight “Dude, I’m a Virgin!.” The track is a more grunge-based rock song featuring some great guitar riffs and vocal performances (specifically the harmonies throughout the verses).

Some more alternative-leaning songs also dropped this week, led by Slaughter Beach, Dog’s “Float Away.” This tune is the second single from the band’s upcoming record Crying, Laughing, Waving, Smiling. It is a breezy, acoustic song perfect for summer, making their new record very anticipated. Indie-pop artist Claud released their second record Supermodels this past week featuring “A Good Thing.” The track is a highlight from the album and adds to the overall great album (also featuring a track called “Paul Rudd” including a cameo in a video from Paul Rudd himself, check it out). Singer-songwriter Cece Coakley released “Happy Adjacent,” hot off the heels of her amazing single from June. The song features a stunning melody and is equally as stunning songwriting from Coakley.

Pop music had an amazing week this week starting off strong with Troye Sivan’s “Rush.” The song is a dance-pop cut that Sivan had been teasing across social media. The wait was well worth it as the song is immediately catchy upon listening, gleaming with its club-ready production. New breakout artist PinkPantheress released “Turn Your Phone Off” featuring a verse from Destroy Lonely. The track has a dance-esque beat throughout but features both pop and rap elements. Broadway and now-upcoming pop star Reneé Rapp released “Talk Too Much” from her soon-to-be-released debut album Snow Angel. The song is a slinking pop cut that shines in the chorus and its spoken bridge. Billie Eilish dropped her new song from the upcoming (and much-anticipated) Barbie movie. “What Was I Made For?” is a somber reflection on one’s worth that stuns with Eilish’s beautiful voice and lyricism.

That is a wrap on this edition of The Weekend Replay! Enjoy the past week of tunes and come back next week for another recap.
