The Weekend Replay
Happy April! Happy Monday! Happy American Circus Day! Happy Weekend Replay! It’s another fantastic week for new music, follow along to check out fresh tracks to kick your week off in the best way possible.
boygenius have finally shared their long-awaited full-length LP, the record, a follow-up to their 2018 self-titled EP. the record showcases the unique individual and collective talents of Julien Baker, Lucy Dacus, and Phoebe Bridgers, and the trio has received unprecedented praise from fans and critics alike. Then Jenny Lewis chimes in with her eclectic indie folk sound on “Psychos”, and NJ indie/emo duo Fox Teeth’s sophomore album, Through the Blue, is out now and shares a dreamier emo sound…like, dreamo basically. Connecticut’s waveform* matches this tonality with the release of their single “Firework”. It’s a very alternative, very rock, very indie sound that’s a lot of a lot without being too much of anything.
If you managed to get it out of April Fool’s Day unscathed, I’m sorry…but Arcadia Grey isn’t. The self-proclaimed sparklepunk crew’s single “GET PRANKED (but for real, you just got pranked)” was accompanied by a social media post announcing “We are beyond excited to announce our new record GET PRANKED! Releasing on 420/69,2666.” Teen Jesus and the Jean Teasers have shared a new single titled “Lights Out”, which has a very clear Riot Grrrl influence that has been twisted into a totally unique sound within their catalog. Plus, On Pink marks their return with “RUOCOA”, with stunning drums and basslines that drive the track. And Sunny Side Down’s EP Dog Food is a very indie, very punky, very queer, emotional, and vulnerable release that is such an impressive collection of tracks (personally, I’ll be keeping an eye on this outfit. I can’t wait to see what they do next).
MisterWives, whose name you might remember if you listened to any alternative radio station in 2015, has released “Out Of Your Mind”, a single that couldn’t be more different from what I remember the band sounding like. Also a big name from 2010s alt-pop, Melanie Martinez has returned with Portals, thirteen songs that put an end to the Crybaby persona the artist established in 2015, and Chappell Roan’s “Kaleidoscope” is the latest indie/poppy ballad single from the up-and-coming superstar, and it’s super heartbreaking, really though, I cannot recommend it enough. But don’t let it linger for too long. spill tab picks up the groove a bit with the release of “Window”.
Icona Pop has probably reached icon status by this point, and they just blessed the world with another dance pop anthem, “Faster”. Georgia and Tyler, The Creator keep the energy sustained with “It’s Eurphoric” and CALL ME IF YOU GET LOST: The Estate Sale respectively. If CMIYGL sounds a little familiar, it’s because this is the deluxe edition of Tyler, The Creator’s 2021 LP.
The Sukis also know a little something about energy, as exemplified by their latest track “Animo”, an authentic alternative sound with some grunge influence. “Something Wrong” is the latest from Hand Habits. Guitarist Meg Duffy (who also fronts Hand Habits) shows off their diverse and impressive talent on this track. There’s a little bit of noise-ish sound to this track, but Alex Lahey cranks up the noise factor a whole bunch on their track “They Wouldn’t Let Me In”. Michigander tones it down again with their EP, It Will Never Be The Same, but still keeps the energy up.
The new single from BERRIES, “Control” marks the third British band on this week’s playlist (at least…there could be more!), but the track is really fun and super catchy. Sessions also shared a single this week, “Eat Your Tail”, a very fundamentally rock track. Then, Midtown’s second single following their ten-year hiatus, “Cut Your Hair”, closes us out for the week.
This has been such a fun week for new tunes. For the indie girlies, for the nostalgic crew, for the real rock lovers, there’s something for everyone this week. As always, follow the Spotify playlists for weekly updates, and check back soon for more new tunes!
