Church Girls returns with the single “I Hate This House”

“I Hate This House”

“…a change of pace from what Church Girls has done in the past. It’s definitely one of their most aggressive tracks to date…”

Throughout their career, Church Girls have released a steady stream of records that blend different veins of the post and pop-punk spectrum into deeply cathartic music. Almost all of their work is steeped in the sentiment of trying to remain hopeful and push forward, even when the pain of setbacks and loss seems overwhelming. I get a pang of grief that’s hard to place when I listen to their fuzzy, unapologetic, and raw songs.

“I Hate This House” is something of a change of pace from what Church Girls has done in the past. It’s definitely one of their most aggressive tracks to date, both tonally and instrumentally. There’s some nice contrast across the song, with watery, spaced-out guitar and melodic vocals in the verses that go right into meaty riffs and an energetic chorus.

There’s a strong frustration embedded in the DNA of this track, which couldn’t be conveyed more clearly through the lyrics. They describe a relationship that’s gotten stuck in an unbearable rut with no hope left of anything changing. It’s a painfully accurate summary of what it feels like to be in the last stretch with someone and everything feels painful and strained and you’re just waiting for the last straw. If you’re familiar with that scenario, this song might just strike a chord with you.
