BERRA Talks Musical Influences

BERRA

“They make music that sounds like what I’d listen to when I was 15. They are really good at making cool poppy guitar riffs and just really take it to the tippy top. Love.”

We have been blessed to have BERRA send us some of their top musical influences and inspirations for their August EP release “Move It Boy”. BERRA is a solo project created by Roba Djalleta, originally started in Atlanta, Georgia, now based in Washington DC.

  • I love Oso Oso with all my heart. A great solo artist that is very aware of his presence in his music, and does a really good job of maximizing that presence. I also just think his guitar playing is sick and cute.

  • Lomela is another artist that definitely influenced my new project, “Move it boy”. I love their voices and melodies, very soft and right. “Hannah Sun is my favorite song by them. I was bumping when they gave Atlanta a shoutout.

  • Another band that definitely inspired me was also “You me and you”, a DC based band. One thing that kept me locked in with them was just their comfortable stage presence. They were sure of themselves and you could feel that through their music and how others were dancing along too. They are always a treat for me and my friends.

  • Snail mail is kind of a no brainer for me. I kind of went through high school listening to them and just felt really excited about them. Their lyrics are great, especially on “lush” where they talk about topics like young love and self identity, but expressing them in really profound ways. I definitely look up to lindey’s vocal range and presence and guitar playing, obviously.

  • Talking Heads is always a good time. They definitely influenced the more upbeat part of “Move it boy”, with the lead single “Star”. I remember being with my friends Carly and Kate driving through Atlanta playing “This must be the place”, it feels very content and just simple happy.

  • The Obsessives is a DC based band. Had the pleasure of meeting Nick a couple times at some gigs in DC, great talker. They make music that sounds like what i’d listen to when I was 15. They are really good at making cool poppy guitar riffs and just really take it to the tippy top. Love.

  • I think Alex G is sick as hell, I think he’s really good at balancing experimentation with intention as well. He’s really cool. Also just love his change in sound over the years, it’s a promising progression, “Gretel” and “Mary” was in heavy rotation while I was writing “Move it boy”

  • Beabadobee is really up there for me. Total fangirl. She’s so sick and is a great pop rock star. She was the first artist that I caught on about using open D tuning,  and now write almost all my songs on some variation of that tuning. I’m very inspired by her melodic abilities as well. She’s sick

BERRA has also mentioned more releases to come this fall/winter. We will be sure to share more information on those releases as they come.
