The Weekend Replay
The world of rock music this week is led by indie-rock group Star 99’s “Girl.” The catchy track is based around bouncing guitar chords and digitized percusion throughout the bridge. Cassadee Pope, former country contestant on The Voice, released pop-punk track “Almost There.” Pope’s voice is strong and powers through the song, supported by electric guitar strums building up to the bursting chorus. Erase Theory’s “Taking A Beat” is a catchy rock cut reminiscent of early 2000’s rock. The echoes after the chorus and the electronic whirs make the track stand out for a great rock track with some punk elements to it. twentythreenineteen’s “Stain Glass Staring” is a punk-esque tune that calls back early Paramore with its lighter alternative production and heavy vocals. JEALOUS MIND released “ICE QUEEN,” a scathing heavy rock song that shines with its main vocal performance. The build up halfway through the song is another standout moment. foxtails’ “violeta” veers off the rock track with some shoegaze sounds but remains a solid rock song with the emotive yelling in the choruses. Brooklyn-based group SKORTS dropped their second single “Bodies,” an indie-rock song supported by solid vocals and cutting guitar riffs. Bird Week’s “Others” has a vocal performance that is unique in the best way, set in front of some solid indie rock guitar and drums.
Some amazing alternative music came out, led by the highly-anticipated “Vampire Empire” from Big Thief. The band played the track live across their tour and even on Stephen Colbert, but it was nowhere to be found to stream. That is, until now. Between Adrianne Lenker’s voice and her lyricism, it is a stunner of a song. Ahead of supporting indie supergroup boygenius on a string of shows, Illuminati Hotties released “Truck,” an alt-pop gem that stuns in production and songwriting. The production is both rock-based and twinkling at the same time, making for a great track. Indie singer-songwriter beabadoobee released her second single of 2022 after the success of the amazing “Glue Song.” Her new one, “the way things go,” is a strummed-out acoustic-focused song that sees her reeling from the aftermath of losing someone. Ethel Cain put a previously-unreleased song on all streaming platforms that was briefly on Soundcloud. “Famous Last Words (An Ode to Eaters)” is a track inspired by last year’s Bones and All (dir. Luca Guadagnino) film that consists of minimal production but holds so much feeling to it. Light reverbed guitar plays over Cain’s yearning voice to create one of her best songs yet. Current Joys dropped another single from their upcoming album LOVE + POP with “Cigarettes.” The track is, by far, the most grunge-tinged single so far and even ends with short screams.
This week in pop and rap music was just as packed with great new tunes. Alternative-pop sister trio HAIM released “Home” from the Barbie (dir. Greta Gerwig) movie soundtrack and it is the highlight from it. The group’s synth-pop track is a stunner and (after seeing the movie) fits the soundtrack perfectly. New and solidified rap star Ice Spice dropped “Deli,” which might just be her best song yet. Featuring some insanely catchy wordplay and delivery, the track is a perfect tour de force of the new rap queen’s talents.
That is all we have for you in this past week of music! Stay tuned for next week’s Weekend Replay for another recap of another selection of some great new tunes.
