The Weekend Replay
As we’re basically at the halfway point of 2023, we’re all starting to have our favorites—more on that later ;) —but some of this week’s newest tracks just might throw your rankings out of order a little bit. That’s why you’re here though. Welcome back to the Weekend Replay.
Porch Coffin opens this week’s mix with “Rosen Hotel”. It’s an absolute banger, and you can read more about it here. Innerlove. joins along to the choir of new releases, contributing one of the few midwest emo tracks to this week’s compilation with their new album Roscoe.
Then, new music from Rob Moose really takes us in a new direction. Moose’s EP Inflorescence is set to be released this August, and “Marvel Room” is a sneak peek at it with a feature from Bon Iver. Jason Isbell and the 400 Unit also shared new music, Weathervane, a through and through Americana album. Plus, feeble little horse just released Girl with Fish, an album chock-full of bops from front to back that show the Pittsburgh-based crew’s destiny for success.
We’re taken (very willfully) into a different direction by Amaara who just shared Fountain Baby, fourteen tracks that are summer as a sound, setting the tone for Jimmy Montague’s “A Moment Like This” and all of the summer good vibes continue. LUNA AURA’s “LOST IN THE FICTION” adds the heat for this summer as a super catchy track with beyond-angsty riffs. Portugal. The Man will surely bring us down a little with “Plastic Island” for the beachy-ish summer tonality. Boldly James and ChanHays join forces on a seven-track hip-hop LP titled Prisoner of Circumstance, carrying on the summery sounds.
Of course, we have to mention Squid’s new album O Monolith which we have been patiently waiting for since “Swing (In A Dream)” was released and featured on TWR. This album lives up to all the anticipation, with eight really really noisy and experimental tracks featuring genuinely fascinating instrumentation that make this album such a pleasure to listen to. Also new this week is Stay Off the Fence’s “Where We Go”, which has a dark and rich sound that you absolutely will not be on the fence about (lol sorry). And new music from Guy Blue keeps up with a little bit of darkness and intrigue with a lot of nostalgia and distortion on a reimagined version of the Pallet Town theme song from Pokémon on “New Pallet Theme”. And speaking of reimagined tracks, Braxe + Falcon re-released their 2022 Step By Step EP, but this time, it’s Step By Step Remixes with up to three different versions of some tracks.
Some older favs are also sharing new music, with fresh tracks from The Front Bottoms and The Maine. The new TFB track is called “Punching Bag” and is being dubbed “Flashlight Pt. 2” by some fans. The Maine’s two new tracks are called “blame” and “how to exit a room”, and both bands have new albums you can expect the first week of August (Aug. 1 for The Maine and Aug. 4 for TFB).
Hope these new bops didn’t shuffle your favs for the year too much, but at the same time…hope they did. Come back next week to find even more new favorite tunes.
