The WEEKEND REPLAY 01.09.23

The Weekend Replay is back from the holiday hiatus. Here are all of the new releases so far in 2023.

Sir Echo kicks the year off strong with a double release of singles “Raven” and “Obituary”. White Reaper’s “Pink Slip” blends early 2000s pop punk with a contemporary alternative which Stand and Wave compliment pretty nicely with a much more modern emo sound on their single “Troubleshooting”, which Tie Dye Ghost’s “Seasons” adds to. “Return My Head” from The Murder Capital keeps rock at the forefront of this year’s sounds but adds a darker tonality to it. JW Francis takes a different approach with the release of “Going Home to a Party”–songs like “I Wanna Be Your Basketball” which features Margaux are a fun, beachy rock sound. Iggy Pop’s ever-growing experimental sound continues with the release of an 11-track long album, “EVERY LOSER”, and new wave vibes are continued in Frankie Rose’s “Anything”.

Ice Spice has made her presence in the world of rap and hiphop known, and she’s shown that she’s not going anywhere anytime soon with “In Ha Mood”. bludnymph upholds the power Ice Spice put out with her single “Lights Out”, which transitions into CJ Fly’s “HAVE KNOTS” in a somewhat surprising way that juxtaposes almost opposite ends of a genre spectrum. Ben Beal, Kill Bill: The Rapper, and Elijah Who put out a single, “Celebi” that further explores the diversity of hiphop with R&B influences, as does “Indica Music” from AJ Suede–a super quick album with catchy, mellow beats.

Mo Lowda & the Humble add a shift in the intensity with the release of their EP “O.O.Y.O”, the title track of which starts off soft, but by no means timid, and builds into something truly special. A light R&B sound is brought on by daisy veacock with “the things that you tell her” and “GO BACK” from Madison Ryann Ward. “Nothing is Real” from BUZZ creates a cacophony of unique sounds that create a very whimsical single, but wilt brings us back down to earth with “nothign special” (arguably a very special track with intense and precise instrumentation). Italian singer-songwriter fefè brings back a dreamy element to the start of this year with “motori” that  Rozi Plain adds a contribution to with “Painted The Room”.

Soft indie rock energy is brought back in one last time with a new release from The Lemon Twigs with their single “Corner Of My Eye” and from Battleviews, “All of My Days”.

If the releases from this week are any indication, 2023 will be an incredible year all around. With diverse genres and distinct artistry coming to the scene, we are eager to see what music this year has in store for all of us.
