THE WEEKEND REPLAY

Welcome back to The Weekend Replay! This past week in music was, dare I say, one of the best in recent memory…and I have all of it right here for your listening enjoyment. Get your headphones, speaker, car or whatever you use to listen to music, and let’s get started.

Leading rock music this week is Brooklyn-based band MX Lonely with their new single “Someone Who Isn’t Me.” The rock track stands out for its shoegaze-esque production, mixed with a traditional indie-rock sound. The vocals are distorted just the perfect amount, with a great amount of power and emotion behind them. Hard rock group New Years Day put out their new track “Half Black Heart” on Friday. The song just gets better as it goes on, amping up the power to its peak at the end, in a flurry of electric guitar and heavy drums. Punk duo Daisy Grenade dropped their new song “Liquor and Kerosene,” featuring The Maine. The track recalls an early 2000’s pop-punk sound, with the two artists’ vocals complimenting each other flawlessly.

Alternative music starts with Caroline Polachek’s new remix of her 2023 track “Butterfly Net,” now featuring indie singer-songwriter Weyes Blood. The track stands at almost six minutes long, completely revamping the production for a more minimalistic sound. The two artists had previously performed the track together at shows and finally released it for everyone’s enjoyment. It comes off of Polachek’s upcoming Valentine’s Day release of the deluxe edition of her acclaimed album Desire, I Want To Turn Into You. Noah Kahan released the last new single from his Stick Season era with the previously-teased song “Forever.” Invoking a minimalist sound reminiscent of Bon Iver throughout the verses, the track comes alive in the chorus, where the guitar picks up as Kahan touches on feelings of contentment in a relationship.

Kicking off pop music is Kacey Musgraves’s long-awaited return. The reigning country queen released the title track off of her new album Deeper Well, due out on March 15. Her new song is a pivot away from the pop influences of her last record star-crossed. It’s a guitar-based tune with lots of pensive thinking about her past, with a very bright outlook towards her present. Maggie Rogers dropped her new single “Don’t Forget Me,” which she’d previously performed on her Summer of 23 Tour (that I was fortunate enough to witness and have been impatiently waiting for its release since). It leads her upcoming album of the same name, which will be released on April 12. The track ventures away from most of the singer-songwriter’s discography into an almost-country sound, with songwriting that focuses on the love lives of those surrounding her, drawing back to what she hopes for in her own. Yet another long-awaited return comes from an alternative-pop singer-songwriter girl in red, with her new single “Too Much” coming from her upcoming record I’m Doing It Again Baby! out April 12. Her new song is an upbeat pop track with lyrics detailing the faults of a relationship where someone is made to feel like they’re too much for their partner.
