“The Bell Jar” - Review of Chrissy’s New Single
Chrissy released her new single “The Bell Jar” on Friday, Feb. 23. The indie singer-songwriter’s new song (with a title alluding to the Sylvia Plath novel of the same name) comes after she teased it across social media the past few months.
The song opens with a light, breezy acoustic guitar track. Her voice is soft, but the emotion behind it begs to be heard, as she sings in the pre-chorus, “This sadness runs so deep that my feet can’t reach the bottom.” Nothing accompanies Chrissy’s voice besides said guitar until the second verse kicks in. The guitar tracks start layering up, with twinkling percussion in the background. The song would work as an acoustic one, but the ramp-up in production takes it to a level that it’s able to truly shine on.
The track’s chorus, the only part that had been revealed until she dropped a snippet of part of a verse last week, has genuinely been stuck in my head since I heard it. The melody is one of the most addicting to come from the world of indie music in recent memory. “I’ll never let someone in again, the way that I did him / Everything is safe if it’s not under my skin,” she sings, almost yearningly with intense reflection on a (recently) past relationship.
Chrissy has released a handful of singles since debuting in 2022 with her song “Socks.” She’s confirmed (according to her Instagram) that her new track is “the first of many” songs she has lined up for the rest of the year. If it’s any indication of what’s to come, it’s gonna be a big year for her.
“The Bell Jar” is now available to buy and stream on all music platforms.
