SIR ECHO’S “CARGO” - review

Sir Echo is an alternative grunge/ rock band based out of Upstate New York. Their newest single Cargo is a unique depiction of what an aftermath of a broken love can do to you. Sir Echo stayed true to their love of grunge music with this single. It’s raw. It’s real. It takes a medium to slow start with a beautiful melody singing over a single guitar riff, leading to a full on powerful entrance from the drums.

Their use of a simple drum rhythm, draws the listeners in. Especially when it is paired by a very enchanting power chord on the guitar. When the chorus comes around the sound slightly changes and has an airy, angelic feel to it. It has a sort of nostalgic energy and I believe this fully has to do with the songwriting. Sir Echo has been a band since October of last year, and as they release music their songwriting improves each time, showing their growth and triumph as a band. You can tell they are writing from their hearts, you can tell they love what they are doing. This single is a reminder as to why we listen to music. To feel. Their motto is “Join the Misfit Etiquette” and it fits perfectly with their brand. The lyrics that sit with me are “Sitting alone in a hot car/ all alone in my parking lot/ like an abandoned dog in the summer.” Fully embodying this unprecedented pain with such a perfect analogy. I could picture it in my mind while I was listening.

At around four minutes, they slow the tempo down and focus on the lyrics “Do I remind you of cargo?” and that is so substantial to the theme of this song. That simple sentence made me personally feel seen, because I have been in relationships where I felt like my partner's carrier bag. Their luggage that gets dragged around with no sense of identity. Please, do not sleep on this single. If you’re an indie, grunge rock lover you need to be listening to this band. The songwriting is beautiful and the mix of dynamics and rhythm are unique. Once you play this song, you won’t be able to get it out of your head. Check out Sir Echo and support local musicians.
