FVNERAL Releases Debut EP “WHEN I GET SOBER”

FVNERALS releases debut EP

“One thing FVNERALS is great at is setting a tone and feeling.”

When I Get Sober is FVNERALS debut EP, a 7 piece out of the Eora/Sydney area with a sound I can only describe as melancholy emo indie-rock. With a focus on the intimacy and emotional aspects of life through acoustic instrumentals and unapologetic vocals this EP will definitely make you feel an array of emotions. Between the faster paced tracks and the much slower, tear filled ones, this EP is absolutely not one you’re going to miss as an indie-rock fan.

“SOBER” starts this EP letting you know what to expect right from the gates. With a focus on ‘becoming sober’ the complimenting vocals between Tim Blunt and Ally Turner this really makes you feel the tension between a torn relationship bent on addiction and inner turmoil. Constantly swelling to its final climax finally releasing to the song's bare bones really lingering on its message. Following this is “GOOD B(i)YE”, which starts out with wind instruments amongst ambient fuzz and sound effects giving you a ‘rainy day’ kind of feel. One thing FVNERALS is great at is setting a tone and feeling. As the ambience fades and guitars enter there is another tone that shifts from ear to ear that really entrances you with its build up.

“CALIFORNIA STREET” is a fantastic example of FVNERALS ability to really build up a song to a climax. With the harmonizing vocals, drums, various guitars, and keyboard ending with the small synth lick really shows how they can build up and release a song in such a fascinating way. “EVER KNOWN” uses more ambient noises, including water drops and what sounds like crying violins really bring a bleakness to this already sad and disheartening song, in the best way possible. The song has a nice on/off rhythm in its lyrical structure I really enjoy and fills the space nicely.

Closing this EP is “GOD DAMN LEDs”, probably the most rock driven song on this release. Rather than the usual build up they are known for, they start right off with all the instruments and both vocalists, breaking down to muted guitars and vocals just to pick right back up where it started. This is definitely the song I would have chosen to end the record myself. With a very nice culmination of everything the record has to offer, as well as building up the end with even harder cymbal crashes and a more ‘aggressive’ vocal style than usual.

Now I know I said the EP has ended, but in fact there is a nice bonus track, a Lakeland Remix of “God Damn LEDs”, which takes away most of the instruments and lays the vocals over a much more calm and collected synth breakdown of the track's original tune. There are even some additional vocals remixed over the originals adding more layers to an already thick and well rounded composition. This even makes the track just a few seconds longer than the original, definitely a plus in my book.

Definitely be sure to check out this record, and keep an eye out for future FVNERAL releases as well!
