THE WEEKEND REPLAY
Welcome back to another Weekend Replay here at Doors at Seven! I have a great playlist of tunes lined up for you this week, so get your headphones ready, and let’s begin.
Rock music is led by the New Jersey-originated group Thursday, with their new track “Application For Release From The Dream.” The group’s new release is their first new song in thirteen (!) years. The group has expressed interest in dropping more standalone singles and not returning to a traditional album rollout. It was well worth the wait, with whirring guitars and strong, theatric vocals throughout the choruses. Pop punk artist Taylor Acorn dropped her new track “Greener,” expanding on the well-known phrase of “the grass being greener on the other side.” Acorn connects it to a romantic relationship fizzling out, with what she sees on her new independent side. Her vocals throw it back to classic 2000s pop punk, with a great hooky melody throughout the choruses.
Alternative music starts off with Peter McPoland’s new track “Speed of the Sound (of you).” The alternative artist digs into a more relaxed surf grunge sound than his heavy rock-inspired debut album from last year. Reminiscent of Current Joys’s earlier work, McPoland emulates the sound flawlessly, with descriptive storytelling and catchy guitar riffs. Mall Goth released their new song “Two Step,” a bouncy indie-pop cut that sees the Upstate New York-based band tap into a very catchy groove. The chorus repeats the hook of “If only you could see my two step,” with a driving drum beat and ricocheting guitar picking.
Kicking off pop music this week is Norwegian pop star girl in red, with her new song “Phantom Pain” from her newly-released sophomore record I’M DOING IT AGAIN BABY! The track sees a new side to the musician’s artistry, as the song transforms as it goes on. With sections like a French-sung lullaby full of chirping birds, to a glitchy and fast-paced outro, it is a rollercoaster of a song in the best way possible. Suki Waterhouse dropped the first taste of her upcoming sophomore album, with her new single “My Fun” (featuring a surprise B-Side titled “Faded,” which is just as great). Waterhouse seems to be playing with a more retro sound for her new record, with distorted vocals and fun little production details, like a flute playing towards the end of the last chorus. The lyrics are very playful, too, and this new sound suits her very well.
