The Weekend Replay
Welcome back to another Weekend Replay! This lovely July 10 edition features some great tunes from the past week. From Taylor Swift to Current Joys and in between and beyond, we have you covered.
Fresh out of the rock world is Godseyes “Memories in Blue.” The song is off of the Long Island hardcore band’s debut full-length album Progress//Regress. The track is a heavy one, bouncing between pounding drums and guitar. After a series of singles and EPs, the band is gearing up for a solid album release. Also released this week was “ROC SH!T” from UnityTX. Another hardcore rock track, the track has hip-hop elements with the delivery of the verses amidst heavy drums and electric guitar whirrs. The band will be releasing their new full-length album FERALITY on Sept. 8.
This week’s alternative section is led by Current Joys’ second single from their upcoming LOVE + POP record. “My Shadow Life” is a breezy track compared to the previous and grittier lead single, utilizing light guitar strums throughout the whole track backed by frontman Nick Rattigan’s vocals. Peter McPoland dropped “Ceiling Fan/Piggy,” the fourth stunning single from his upcoming debut album Piggy. The production of the song is gritty in the best way possible, ending with a section of distorted vocals and production choices that perfectly suit McPoland’s vocals. The track continues the sound that he has been developing across the album’s singles so far, making his album one of the most anticipated of the year. An unlikely yet very satisfying collaboration, Dominic Fike and Weezer released “Think Fast” from Fike’s new sophomore full-length record Sunburn. The song reflects on themes of summer and past love and bounces between the hip-hop-based verse and alternative-fueled choruses backed by building guitar.
Starting off this week’s more pop-based section is none other than Taylor Swift. The songwriting superstar goes back to her country roots for Speak Now (Taylor’s Version), the re-recorded version of her third studio album from 2010. A stunner from Swift’s “vault songs” on the new release is “I Can See You (Taylor’s Version),” a thumping track with more alternative elements in the production provided by herself and longtime collaborator Jack Antonoff. Indie band GROUPLOVE dropped their sixth studio album I Want It All Right Now, featuring the highlight “Billie.” The song is a lighter track from the album, consisting of some more rock-based ones. The album is one of the year’s best so far, and “Billie” is one of the best on it, with vivid storytelling and airy vocals. A standout from Gus Dapperton’s new record Henge is “Midnight Train,” a synth-pop track featuring stellar vocal effects throughout the verses and an ultimately catchy chorus. Declan McKenna drops standalone single “Sympathy,” an indie-pop track perfect for summer with some horns in the chorus and breezy guitar picking throughout the verses.
Some beautiful and more mellow songs also arrived within the past week. Bruno Major’s “A Strange Kind Of Beautiful” is a stunning piano-based song with amazing songwriting and a lovely melody repeated throughout the choruses. Julie Byrne’s “Portrait Of A Clear Day” is an acoustic guitar-based song that shows Byrne’s vivid descriptions of love shown through her observations of her surroundings. Byrne’s voice echoes with passion and her lyricism is incredible. The song comes from her also-just-released record The Greater Wings.
That caps off this edition of The Weekend Replay! Come back next week for another recap of another stellar week in music.
