The Weekend Replay
Spring is always going to have a tinge of change, both in good and bad ways. For me, that means graduating from college (bittersweet for sure), for you that might mean planting some flowers, getting a new car, or maybe some good old-fashioned spring cleaning, but sometimes what we need is consistency. A break from the change. So, welcome back to the Weekend Replay.
This week, we kick things off with Origami Angel who just shared “My PG County Summer”, a crunchy and catchy pop-heavy (but not too heavy) pop punk emo track. If you haven’t been paying attention to Origami Angel yet, you absolutely should, they are doing some truly amusing things with their music. “Cosmic Leash” by Chris Farren was also just shared this week with an accompanying music video with a creative mockumentary narrative style driving it. Also new from Polyvinyl Records this week is Man On Man’s “Take It From Me” and “Hush”, songs that document the duo’s queerness ahead of their upcoming album Provincetown which you can expect this June. And Chappell Roan keeps the good gay streak going strong with the release of “Red Wine Supernova”, an indie pop summery single.
Lana Del Rey finally released “Say Yes to Heaven” a single which was first recorded in 2013 and started gaining traction on TikTok recently. Plus, The Telescopes released their fifteenth album this past week titled Of Tomorrow. In a similar sonic vein, Heartbreak Rules was just shared from Horse Jumper of Love, just in time for the late summer nights on the horizon. Keeping up with the high emotions, YEИDRY elegantly voices her journey with grief on her latest track, “La Puerta”. Then PONY comes along with Velveteen to bring us back to an indie pop realm.
If you were waiting for things to really kick up, here’s your shining star of the week: Alex Lahey just shared The Answer is Always Yes and it helps ease us back into a more alternative sound. Plus, Osees shared a new track, “Intercepted Messages”. It’s synth-pop, it’s new wave, it’s just really fun to listen to. Then Aussie alternative icons Hard-Ons chime in with “Apartment for Two”. “YOU NEEDED A HIT//” from KennyHoopla sustains the energy brought on by Hard-Ons in a really catchy and energetic new single. Giveaway and Ridgeway both shared new tracks that fall on opposite ends of the pop-punk/emo spectrum. Giveaway’s “Leave Me Be” falls on the first half, and Ridgeway’s “Winding” is more on the emo end (but like, it’s beachy emo). And then Gio Genesis shares a massive depth of vocals and lyrics on the latest, “23 Til Infinity”.
Rounding us out for the week are artists mostly known for their Top 40 hits with deeper cuts that just hit right where they should. First, Hozier shared “Francesca”. Every Hozier song sounds like a Hozier song, and this song is absolutely no exception. It’s definitely more evolved and not as airy and light as some of his older tracks. Kesha’s Gag Order was also just released, and this album is another stunning, authentic, and candid look inside the artist’s life.
Whatever change your spring brings, just know that at the end of the day, the Weekend Replay will always be here for you. Until next time.
